20 Years Service Design Leadership | Guest Lecturer, Unitec & AUT | Industry Advisor, academyEX | Masters in English, Psychology & Design Management | Human-Centred Design Specialist
Stephen McKernon has spent two decades in lead service design roles across some of New Zealand's most complex and consequential organisations: health, telecoms, banking, transport, and education. That breadth is not incidental. It reflects a career built on a single consistent question: what do people actually need, and how do you design systems that genuinely serve them rather than just processing them?
Three masters degrees spanning English, Psychology, and Design Management give him an unusually complete toolkit for that work. The English background sharpens his ability to listen for what people are really saying. The psychology gives him a framework for understanding the gap between stated needs and actual behaviour. The design management turns both into something actionable. Together, they make him one of the most genuinely cross-disciplinary practitioners in his field.
As an Industry Advisor and Guest Lecturer at academyEX, Unitec, and AUT, he helps postgraduate learners apply human-centred design thinking to problems that genuinely matter, not hypothetical cases but real organisations navigating real complexity.
